Marriage records are public documents that list all the weddings that have taken place in a certain area over, in some cases, hundreds of years. Whether a wedding ceremony was religious and took place in a church or it was what is called a civil ceremony and was held in a courthouse or other venue, there must still have been a marriage certificate issued, and it is a copy of this certificate that is kept on file in local archives.

Vital records most commonly refer to records such as birth and death certificates, marriage licenses and divorce decrees, wills and the like. These records are created by local authorities, and with possible exceptions for events overseas, in the military, or in the District of Columbia. They are not considered Federal records; therefore they are not held by NARA.

Marriage licenses are the most common marriage records in the United States. They are issued by the appropriate authority prior to the marriage ceremony, and they have come to replace the posting of banns and intentions. Marriage licenses, which grant permission for a marriage to be performed, are returned to civil authorities after the ceremony.
